Fourth Sunday of Easter, Good Shepherd Sunday
The readings of the day invite us to contemplate the tender image of Christ as the Good Shepherd, who leads, protects, and cares for his flock. His relationship with the sheep is one of trust, recognition, and belonging, where the sheep follow only their shepherd, the one who knows them personally and calls them by name (St. Bueno’s Outreach).
26th April – Day of Prayer for Vocations – A vocation is not simply a personal choice; it is a gift from God for the good of the whole Church. Every community has a role in nurturing that gift. When we encourage and pray for vocations, we are helping to ensure that the Gospel continues to be lived, preached, and witnessed in our world. The call to religious life/priesthood is as alive today as ever—it simply needs hearts that are open enough to hear it.
The Carmelite way of life offers a particularly beautiful witness: a life rooted in prayer, community, and service, inspired by the example of Our Lady and shaped by a life of ‘living in allegiance to Jesus Christ’. Carmel invites men and women to seek God in silence and contemplation through living the vowed life of poverty, chastity and obedience, and from that encounter to bring hope and compassion to others. The Carmelite charism reminds us of the importance of listening, and of trusting in God’s presence at the heart of everyday life.
As a church community, each one of us can actively foster this call to religious life. We do this by:
- Speaking positively about religious life and priesthood.
- Encouraging young people to be open to God’s plan in their lives.
- Sharing the stories of those who have responded generously to the call to serve both at home and abroad.
- A word of encouragement, a gentle invitation, or a listening ear can make a lasting difference in someone’s journey of discernment.
- Above all, we can pray. Pray that the Lord of the harvest will send labourers into His vineyard. Pray for a spirit of courage and generosity in those men and women who may be discerning a call to Religious Life and Priesthood.
On Vocations Sunday let us continue to pray and work together that our communities be places where vocations are welcomed, nurtured, and celebrated, and where the vocation to Carmelite life continues to flourish, praying in gratitude for the Carmelites who serve faithfully among us.
