Lay Carmel

Lay Carmel is the organisation of Lay Persons within the Carmelite Family. This exists worldwide and is particularly strong within the island of Ireland.

Each religious order has its own unique spirituality. Carmelite Spirituality centres on contemplative prayer, service and community.  These dimensions of the charism can find expression in ‘many and varied ways’ (Carmelite Rule). The commitment to religious life as Carmelite friars and sisters is one such way. However, many lay people, single or married, also value Carmelite Spirituality as an integral element of their lives.

We often speak of the Carmelite Family as all those who find that Carmelite Spirituality resonates with them. For some, this may involve reading and studying the writings of the various Carmelites saints and figures. For others, it may be coming together in groups for prayer and discussion. While others find the Carmelite call to service most appealing.

If you would like to know more about exploring Carmelite Spirituality as a lay person,  you can contact any of our local groups directly or contact the National Committee
