Pope Leo XIV Sends Letter of Encouragement to Carmelite General Chapter
The Carmelite General Chapter 2025 opened in Malang, Indonesia with a deeply moving letter from Pope Leo XIV, read aloud by the Prior General, Fr Míċeál O’Neill, O.Carm., at the conclusion of the opening Mass.
In his letter, the Holy Father expressed joy at the gathering of the Order during this Jubilee Year and encouraged the friars to treat this moment as a time of spiritual renewal. Quoting from the Letter to the Hebrews, he urged:
“Hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)
Rooted in Prayer and Fraternity
The Pope highlighted the Chapter’s theme, “Our Contemplative Fraternity Discerns Its Mission,” as a true reflection of the Carmelite charism. He emphasised that the Order’s life of prayer and fraternity must remain the foundation of its apostolic mission, shaping every facet of ministry. By rooting themselves in silent prayer and mutual care, Carmelites are able to discern the signs of the times — particularly through the perspective of the poor — and respond with faithful love.
The Call to Work and Witness
Referencing the Carmelite Rule’s exhortation to “have some sort of work to do” (Rule 20), Pope Leo encouraged the Order to embody Christ’s merciful gaze in all aspects of their mission. Whether through preaching retreats, spiritual accompaniment, parish ministry, or educating youth, the Carmelites, he said, are called to bear witness to unity, especially in a world often fractured by division and polarisation.
Entrusted to Our Lady of Mount Carmel — Pope Leo XIV’s Letter
In closing, Pope Leo entrusted the General Chapter to the loving protection of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, reminding the Order of her guiding presence throughout its history. He then imparted his Apostolic Blessing to all Carmelites as a pledge of wisdom, joy, and peace in the Lord.
As the General Chapter continues until 26 September, the Carmelite Family around the world is united in prayer that this gathering may be a true moment of grace, renewal, and guidance for the Order’s mission in today’s world.
