This Sunday, (22 March), Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin will be gathering in prayer and thanksgiving to mark the 80th anniversary of the Carmelite presence in Zimbabwe, a milestone that reflects a remarkable story of missionary faith, friendship, and collaboration between Ireland and Zimbabwe.

The special Mass on Sunday, March 22, will be at 4 p.m., and celebrated by Most Rev. Dermot Farrell, Archbishop of Dublin. The celebration brings together members of the Carmelite community, parishioners, and members of the Zimbabwean community in Ireland in a spirit of gratitude and remembrance.

The Carmelite presence in Zimbabwe began in 1946, when the first friars from the Irish Province of the Carmelite Order travelled to what was then known as Southern Rhodesia. Responding generously to the missionary call of the Church, they arrived with a simple but profound desire: to work among the people and bring the message of the Gospel to those most in need.

In the years that followed, the Carmelites became deeply involved in the life of local communities, serving in parishes, schools, and pastoral ministries, particularly in the Diocese of Mutare and the surrounding region. The mission was strengthened by the courageous leadership of Bishop Donal Lamont, O.Carm., who stood faithfully with his people during difficult years of political struggle. Today the Church in Mutare continues to be guided by another Irish Carmelite, Bishop Paul Horan, O.Carm.

Over time, the mission flourished and began to bear new fruit through the growth of local vocations, giving rise to a strong community of Zimbabwean Carmelites who now carry the mission forward with dedication and faith.

Today the work of Carmel in Zimbabwe continues through prayer, pastoral ministry, education, spiritual accompaniment, retreat work, and the quiet daily witness of Carmelite life. What began eighty years ago as a missionary initiative has become a shared story between two nations — a story of faith, service, and enduring friendship.

The celebration at Whitefriar Street Church is enriched by the presence of members of the Zimbabwean community in Ireland, whose participation highlights the living bond that continues to unite the two countries.

Rooted in the spirit of prayer, fraternity, and service, the Carmelite mission looks forward with trust that this shared journey will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.
