Prayers for Discernment & Vocations

Prayers for Discernment & Vocations

A collection of prayers for those discerning their vocation and those who wish to pray for an increase in vocations

Prayer for Discernment I

Lord Jesus, you call each of us to serve you in love and humility. Every vocation in the Church is holy and is given for the building up of your body the Church into a living temple. Please reveal to me the vocation you are calling me to follow, the road that will lead me to deepest intimacy with you and to the fullness of life, love and joy that are yours alone to give. Give me courage, Lord, to say yes to my vocation as Mary your mother said yes to hers. Amen.

Prayer for Discernment II

I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will.

Whatever you may do, I thank you: I am ready for all, I accept all.

Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures – I wish no more than this, O Lord.

Into your hands I commend my soul: I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father.

– Charles de Foucauld

Prayer for Discernment III

Lord, my God and my loving Father, you have made me to know you, to love you, to serve you, and thereby to find and to fulfil my deepest longings. I know that you are in all things, and that every path can lead me to you.

But of them all, there is one especially by which you want me to come to you. Since I will do what you want of me, I pray you, send your Holy Spirit to me: into my mind, to show me what you want of me; into my heart, to give me the determination to do it, and to do it with all my love, with all my mind, and with all of my strength right to the end. Jesus, I trust in you.   Amen

Prayer for Discernment IV

Lord, I thank You for the gifts You have given me, especially for life, love, family and friends. Help me to know myself better and to know my talents, as I pray, study and decide on my life’s work. Help me to see and understand the path You open for me. Help me choose a life’s work which will be in response to my potential and your love for me.

If I am being invited to follow You as a priest, brother, sister, give me a generous heart to respond to your challenging call and the strength to follow You wherever You lead me.   Amen.

Prayer for Vocations to the Carmelite Order

Gracious God,

We thank you for the gift of Carmel.

We ask you to continue to call forth men and women of generous hearts to the Order of Carmel. May they be like the prophet Elijah, full of enthusiasm and love for you.

May Mary be their inspiration, welcoming your invitation to serve the Church as disciples and bearers of the Word. Inspire them to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, prayerfully working to build your kingdom of justice and peace.

Faithful God, give us the grace and courage to discern and respond generously to your call.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Pray for us.

Holy Prophet Elijah. Pray for us.

Prayer for Vocations I

God our Father,

You will all men and women to be saved and come to the knowledge of your Truth.

Send workers into your great harvest that the Gospel may be preached

to every creature and your people, gathered together by the word of life

and strengthened by the power of the sacraments, may advance in the way

of salvation and love.

I ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Prayers for Vocations II

God our Father,

You made each of us to use our gifts in the Body of Christ.

We ask that you inspire young people whom you call to Priesthood

and consecrated life to courageously follow your will.

Send workers into Your great harvest so that the Gospel is preached,

the poor are served with love, the suffering comforted,

and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
