Carmelite Priory, Moate
Welcome to the website of the Carmelite Priory, Moate, Co Westmeath. Over the years, the Carmelite presence in Moate has changed a number of times since its first foundation here in 1735.
The Carmelite Priory in Moate has an attractive church, a well-stocked repository and a modern pastoral centre. The priory itself is home to a small community of Carmelites who minister pastorally in the church and in the surrounding area. Our church, dedicated in 1868, has been praised for its ‘interior simplicity’ and ‘exterior beauty’. Someone remarked recently to a friar ‘if I lived in Moate I would spend all day in this church’. We invite you to visit whenever you are in the area.
Our presence here dates from the 1770s but the Carmelites came to the hinterland, at Ardnacranny, as far back as the fourteenth century. This foundation was suppressed during the Religious Reformation of the 16th century.
