As we continue our Carmelite Pilgrimage to Lourdes, pilgrims are reminded that this year will be particularly special as we welcome Pope Leo XIV to Lourdes on Saturday, 26 September and Sunday, 27 September.
The Holy Father’s visit will bring thousands of people together for a wonderful weekend of prayer and celebration. It will also mean additional security measures, access restrictions and changes to movement around Lourdes.
Please take note of the important information and times below and continue to follow any additional guidance provided by your group leaders and Sanctuary officials.
Sunday, 27 September – Papal Mass
Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Holy Mass at 11:00am on the Sanctuary meadow.
Please note:
- Arrive at the Sanctuary before 8:30am.
- The Sanctuary opens at 5:00am.
- The meadow for the Papal Mass will no longer be accessible after 9:30am.
- An access pass is required.
- Allow plenty of additional time for security checks and large crowds.
- Be prepared for extended periods of standing and waiting.
Other Papal Visit Highlights
Saturday, 26 September – Prayer at the Grotto
- Pope Leo XIV will pray at the Grotto of the Apparitions on Saturday evening.
- Pilgrims should arrive no later than 5:30pm.
- An access pass is required.
Sunday, 27 September – Marian Torchlight Procession
- The Marian Torchlight Procession begins at 9:00pm, followed by an address from Pope Leo XIV.
- Pilgrims should arrive no later than 7:00pm.
- An access pass is required.
What to Bring
With increased security and large numbers of pilgrims expected throughout the weekend, please come prepared:
- Keep your access pass with you at all times.
- Bring sufficient water and food, as food and drink outlets will not be available within the Sanctuary grounds.
- Dress appropriately for the weather, including rain gear or sun protection as necessary.
- Make sure your phone is fully charged before leaving your hotel.
- Bring only essential personal belongings and avoid bulky bags or backpacks.
- Lightweight folding stools are permitted.
- Keep your belongings with you at all times.
- Follow all queues, barriers and instructions from officials.
Sanctuary Opening Hours & Access
During the Papal Visit:
- Friday, 25 September: 6:00am–midnight.
- Saturday, 26 September: 6:00am–11:00pm.
- Sunday, 27 September: 5:00am–1:00am.
- An access pass is required on Saturday and Sunday.
- Access will be through the Saint Michael Gate, Saint Joseph Gate and Prairie Gate.
- The Prairie Gate is designated for persons with reduced mobility.
Travel & Security
Significant traffic and pedestrian restrictions will be in place throughout Lourdes during the weekend.
Please remember:
- Leave earlier than you normally would for all events.
- Expect travel and security checks to take considerably longer than usual.
- Vehicle access will be heavily restricted in areas surrounding the Sanctuary.
- From Saturday afternoon, some areas will become pedestrian-only.
- Pay close attention to instructions from your group leaders, pilgrimage organisers and Sanctuary officials.
