From Sunday, 7 December to Friday, 12 December 2025, members of the Carmelite Commissariat in Zimbabwe gathered at Prophet Elijah Priory for their annual retreat, held under the theme “Returning to Mt Horeb – Returning to the Source.” The week offered the community a precious opportunity to step back from the demands of daily ministry and to renew their lives of prayer, fraternity, and service.
Set aside as a sacred time of silence and reflection, the retreat created space for the brothers to listen attentively once again to the voice of the Lord.
The retreat was facilitated by Fr Foto, a diocesan priest from the Diocese of Masvingo, who guided the brothers in reflecting on contemplative listening, faithful discipleship, and perseverance in vocation. Drawing on Scripture and lived pastoral experience, Fr Foto encouraged the community to attend carefully to God’s presence, particularly in moments of stillness and simplicity.
Throughout the week, the brothers entered deeply into shared prayer and personal meditation, while also strengthening the bonds of fraternity that sustain religious life. Meals, informal conversation, and time spent together as a community complemented the quieter aspects of the retreat, reminding participants of the importance of mutual support and encouragement on the Carmelite journey.
This annual retreat proved to be a valuable moment of renewal for the Commissariat. By returning to the essentials of their calling, the brothers were refreshed in spirit and united in hope, ready to continue their mission with renewed faith and commitment.
