The longest serving member of the community is Fr. Malcahy, O.Carm., who has
been a part of the community for over 63 years and has been a constant
inspiration to all who have come and gone through the years. The Prior of
the community is Fr. Martin Ryan, O.Carm., who recently returned to Moate
after an absence of 20 years during which he served in other Irish Carmelite
communities, he is also the director of the Carmelites Lourdes Pilgrimage.
The assistant prior is Fr. Jaison Kuthanapillil, O.Carm., from India who
joined the Irish community in October of 2007 from St. Thomas’ Province in
India. Fr. Jaison has been in Moate since February 2008. Fr. Bernard

A few years ago a group of over 55’s came together and formed a branch of
the Active Retirement Association of Ireland. It has approximately 40
members now and new members are always welcome. They meet each Friday in the
Carmelite Pastoral Centre and, after having a cup of tea or coffee and
biscuits (occasionally cake!), the members play bowls, skittle, darts, cards
or bingo. Small prizes are given to the winners.
Each month an
outing is arranged. Members have been to shows in Dublin, to a famous garden
centre in Carlow, to race meetings in Punchestown and some have even gone to
the dog races in Mullingar Greyhound Track. On the educational front a very
successful art class was held with an exhibition of the paintings at its
conclusion, also a computer course, a cookery course, jewellery making and
flower arranging were held.
Each year there is
a Christmas dinner together, which is enjoyed by all. There is also have an
annual Mass celebrated by the Carmelite Prior. This year a crib made by some
members will be on display at the Mass. The members are very grateful to the
local Carmelite Community for providing such excellent facilities for their
weekly meetings.
